The Wild Forest of the Ancient

The Wild Forest of the Ancient

The Wild and Fertile Forest from the Ancient Era

The Capital Below the Mist of Horizon

Very remote, vaguely appearing, these civilisations' settlements of the Capital here from the elevated location on the outer rim of the high plateau (16). Among these enchanted juniper hills and hidden paths, dreams of pure Nature are offered by almost every view, as in the mighty abyss and Canyon's uphill adventure. The stunning location of the rock pools described (14) is nearby. Still, this mysteriously secluded gorge with its seductive twilight paths is even closer, where its pathways first gently rise from (B) towards the tributary creek (36) within the loop (14). These natural baths and pools above Bees' Cliff (14), and their sheer proximity, cliffhanging high over the abyss, constitute a surprisingly adventurous, beautiful picnic spot. However, the site is equally breathtakingly beautiful and thrillingly dramatic, as it includes the shocking introduction to the actual waterfall of the abyss and its chasm.

A Gentle Mountainous Highland Landscape

Breathtaking Views and Juniper Giants' Care

A little behind the camera's typical panoramic view, as seen in the header from the mountain's gorgeous viewpoint (16), and a bit uphill, on the high plateau's outer rim ledge, rests a group of magnificent and powerful Juniperus procera trees. Here, far above the dim-capped Capital, these indigenous Juniper trees are unique and appear to have an origin from a past culture, and they are very near, just some steps uphill from this grand viewpoint (16) towards Bees' Cliff (14). At these high viewpoints, the outermost plateau ledge yields a substantial elevation gain. Due to this high drama, the landscape offers beautiful and exciting rest stops and picnic areas, where, except for viewpoint (16) with magnificent scenery, surprises hide in the slope as an old Italian fort ruin at the waterfall (B) - (38). Furthermore, this hike toward the high plateau (14) or (16) also offers surprisingly dignified, furrowed, ancient-patina trees (B) towards (16).

A Forgotten Era of Nature & Serenity

The Route to the View (16) Above the Capital
& Further Description of the Area
[A] The Character Of Entoto Kidane Mehret's Valley
The square [A] serves as a directed and facilitating figure to more easily find points (5) and (37), which are located and encircle the valley at Entoto Kidane Mehret (32). This area (A) begins most of the following hiking trails described. The Italian-built spring water facility (19) is near and within the young family's requirements. Therefore, this cosy place (19) is an excellent choice for most picnics and intimate children's activities.

(B) The Invitation to the crossroad of wilderness
The still, gently upward hike shown within circle (B) includes points (35), (38), and (39) and constitutes both a crossroads of somewhat wild paths and a beautiful rise on a ledge of some metres threshold. This crossroads is located just to the right of point (38). Regardless of the hiking paths within the loop, point (B), all of these upward trails will soon reach the outer rim of the high plateau.

Orienteering Facilitating Hiking-Map Tools

While this type of orientation assistance within the maps described below is suitable for visitors to foreign lands, other requirements are needed to fulfil the traditions of the native population, who prefer to rely on their own orientation in the landscape of the revered past. Hence, an intended clockwork provides direction and Orientation Assistance in the Circle (B). When considering the circle (B), the possibility arises of using it as a directional pointer, with the traditional dial of the pointer's intended tip serving as an excellent tool for finding otherwise hidden objects. Thus, the intended direction at 3:30 shows a pleasantly elevated area above the field (39). This metre-raised ledge is the site of several unique and older native Juniper procera trees. These furrowed Juniper trees tower, awe-inspiring, dominating the surroundings like a mighty crown on the slope above the field (39).

Directions and assistance at the Map Loop (B)
Landscape and Paths of the Southern Slopes
This southern hillside appears at a somewhat high altitude and on the map circle (B), where a beautiful rising ledge appears, including a crossroad within this change in the topography of this exciting landscape. When the map loop (B) with its intended pointer reaches its full extent at 4:30, it points to an area south of the field (39). This rather wild and wavy slope is a fantastic area with a few tremendous native Podocarpus trees, all furrowedly muscled and proudly posing on this hilly southern slope in almost antique motion, where these trees just above appear to hide deeply from a forgotten past.

Direction Map to the Alluring Past

Direction Assistance to the Ancient
Trees (Highland Hiking)
These trees appear just below and on the outermost high-plateau ledge (16), offering stunning views and a seductive fragrance. However, this mountain exploration offers a somewhat thrilling experience with a hint of demands. Although the substantial rise on the mountain's southern hillside offers several wonderful and exciting rest stops, it's nevertheless a gentle route. With magnificent scenery, this Highland offers an excursion with its typical mountain freshness within an enchanting terrain.

Forest and Trees from the Lost Aeons
However, for the most part, with an active outdoor life, this mountain's undulating hillside route for exploring ancient trees does not entail too harsh an ordeal, and it provides regular rest with fresh water. For those who want a wild and mysterious experience, Juniper Forest is a nearly 50-year-old forest of wild and original Juniperus procera trees just east of Point (16). This indigenous Juniperus procera forest (40) is close but still hidden behind a gentle ridge of this viewpoint (16).

Ancient Patinated Trees from the Past Aeons

Indigenous Trees within a Grand Landscape
The indigenous Podocarpus trees (see the photos below) found from a much previous era appear admirably muscular and furrowed around the large farmhouse (39) area just below point (16), which is a great pleasure for any soul with a passion for Nature. Just here, within the map circle (B), below the viewpoint (16), is the farmhouse (39) with large Juniperus procera trees along its upper hillside. Soon after point (39), the path turns slightly to the right towards the location (16), where a landscape of lost dreams infuses fragrances of  Juniper trees in purging resurgence, where each soul offers' a realm of sweetest ardour.

Golden Meadows Among Adorable Junipers

Among Mysterious Shadows In Twilight

The path (42) shown within the loop (14) to Entoto Natural Park (Nursery) 34 is a pleasant walk with minimal elevation change. It usually allows wading with suitable dry rocks over the west side of the meandering stream. This direction passes just a little beside the natural pools above Bees' Cliff (14) and then further north through an open forest before arriving at the Nursery (34). Those who want a deeper Juniper forest emerge from the mist of history, concealed near the 50-year-old wild and original Juniperus procera woodland. This indigenous Juniperus procera forest (40) lies east of point (16) but is still hidden behind an elevated ridge on the eastern slope. This native Juniper forest provides unique insight into how Nature emerged before the introduction of Eucalyptus from Australia over 100 years ago.

Trees, Shrubs, Flowers and Herbs

The Healing Capacity of a Native Forest

Endemic Trees Heal the Ground's Scars
The natural health and fertile beauty in this indigenous Juniper forest (40) to the right of viewpoint (16) illuminates with precision the healing ability of a native forest and the challenging work to restore Nature and habitat that adorned the landscape before the introduction of the foreign and tactically hostile Eucalyptus tree. The importance of careful research on knowledge in natural science is given a rigorous and evident example before any foreign species is considered for introduction into an unfamiliar, evolutionarily incompatible, and vulnerable habitat.

Indigenous Trees with Patina in Unique Terrain
The intended direction indicator within the maps' loops allows a method to be used here with a limited intended dial length. This method also provides for centrally distinguishing locations on the intended clockwork. Consequently, as this intended pointer reaches 60% - (B) of its entire length, and at four o'clock, it becomes possible to find a magnificent native Podocarpus tree to the left of the hiking trail.

The High Plateau and its Brook Wade (41-42)
This is the beginning of the high plateau, where invitingly gentle cliff formations offer a picturesque wade across the brook, which soon flows down to the baths and the waterfall, with the Canyon's abyss, thus providing the entrance to the path (42) towards Entoto Natural Park (Nursery). This brook marks the separation between the eroded road (41) and the continuing trail (42) towards Entoto Natural Park (Nursery). The waterfall at Bees' Cliff  (14) and its secret vaults are very close here. When gazing further along the Canyon to the south, it delivers a dreamlike, fragrant hint of Nature's serenity. Enchantingly attractive, far below the curtains of the morning's mysterious veils, reveals Entoto Kidane Mehret and the Capital.

A High Plateau Trail from South-East to North-West
This ground road (41) towards the rock pools of Bees' Cliff (14) is eroded but good enough for a wide trail appearance and, with some maintenance, even used by cautious, conventional tourist vehicles. However, its extent is sufficient to reach very near these nature pools at Bees' Cliff (14). It is, therefore, an open and beautiful road for a promenade to the rock baths or further brook passage to Entoto Natural Park (Nursery) 34. With this excursion towards the Nursery, the impression of the high plateau is an evident and relaxing contrast to the steep ascent from the sculptural riverbanks at Kidane Mehret (32).

Ethiopia's Indigenous Vegetation

Historical and Biological Background
The Indigenous Podocarpus falcatus (P. gracilior)     (Am:  Zigba)   (Or:  Birbirsa)
These endemic trees, scarce at Entoto, are struggling to survive in the toxic environment created by the eucalyptus. The barren, eroded lands resulting from the eucalyptus' toxin-induced deformity have disrupted the endemic Podocarpus tree's reproductive capacity. A century ago, the international scientific community was unaware of the need to examine the environmental toxicity of plants and animals. With their dense root systems, the original Ethiopian trees formed a tangled, reinforcing indigenous vegetation with a prehistoric quality of tremendous strength, derived from aeons of evolution. This urgent situation calls for immediate action and further scientific examination.

The Dedicated Work Of Restoring the Original Nature
Therefore, a devoted restoration of this original Nature continues through extensive work to re-form the upper soil layer and establish a protective undergrowth. Consequently, it would be a very significant surprise to learn of a new generation of these highly blessed historic Podocarpus falcatus trees, which still grow as ancient, furrowed entities in a magical, graceful, appealing landscape. However, in modern times, these aged, patinated, creased native podocarpus trees are very unusual in the park. Yet, this concealed mountain, Nature describes, is the unique landscape hillside, as indicated by the map loop (B), with the location of these native Podocarpus trees.

The Precarious and Fragile Origin Of Trees
The Podocarpus tree pictured above and to the left carries a unique heritage that can be very important for the Park's legacy. The seed of this small tree was picked from the mother tree in the circle (B), west of the path, left of the area (39) and clearly above (38). Podocarpus falcatus (P. gracilior).

Podocarpus Trees Next to the Paths
To see several other indigenous Podocarpus trees, look just below this field (39) and to the right side in the lower part of Circle (B). These trees just above appear to hide deeply from a forgotten past. This rather wild and wavy slope is fantastic with several native Podocarpus falcatus trees, which muscularly proudly pose from an antique on this hilly southern slope.

Directions Maps to Trees of Legends
The routes to these historic trees and their captivating surroundings lead to high-point views (14)-(16). The map loop (B) encircles the crossroads at this slope and rock ledge, and the topography helps identify the locations of continuing paths upward. From this loop (B), the courses soon arrive at the adorable farmhouse's meadows (39) - (B) with mighty Juniperus procera trees in its upper section. The upward hiking is relatively gentle, and the map loop (B) is served by the surrounding points (35), (38), and (39). The lower loop of the circle (B) also offers access to the Italian fort's ruins (38), providing a picnic spot with a beautiful view over the landscape.

The Canyon's Direction Trails with (B) to (14)
The two crossroads are located just to the right of the Canyon and its fort ruin (38) - (B) and one in the lower part of the circle (B). This second crossroad is to the right and far down, in the loop (B), and its path upward is beautiful, with a few ancient furrowed Podocarpus falcatus trees, where the trail soon leads to the meadows of the farmhouse (39). However, these crossroads align with the lower part of the circle (B) and provide a gentle west-to-east ledge and start. Regardless of the following paths within the loop (B), they will soon arrive at the farmhouse's meadows (39) - (B).

Primordial Nature with Climbing Sport Activities

The Sport's Climbing Wall with Instructors

The Indigenous Podocarpus falcatus
Amazing Adventure Among the Trees Of Antiquity
It is well known that adventurers need something beyond just looking at natural beauty; thus, a direct, hands-on experience is what they seek, one they share with several sports devotees and genuine nature lovers who enjoy the direct influence of Nature on a level only the most physically active devotees can muster. However, it can be a difficult feat to give in to these compelling feelings and experience Nature with mighty trees and high cliffs as a discovery adventure. It may therefore be appropriate to have some preparation and training to prevent a dangerous fall from a higher height.

Safety Centre with an Advisory Responsible in Charge
While this indigenous Podocarpus falcatus tree in the photo to the left and on the map above is located just below the meadow (39) - (B). The required training within the amusement centre, with a safety harness and a supervising instructor, is available at Entoto Park, where, in addition to many amusing activities, a custom-made wall with grip points and an assisting instructor provides a harness and a safety rope to prevent falls. Indeed, this can help families promote their children's motivation and health through outdoor activities in a gorgeous, stimulating environment.

The Arrival On the High Plateau (14) - (16)
Towards Entoto Natural Park (Nursery)
Within the upper right part of the map loop (14) is the threshold of the high table. Behind now are Bees' Cliff's adventurous and beautiful experience and the adorable viewpoint (16). But still, they are very near, with Bees' Cliff just some ten metres to the south and the delightful view (16), now behind but yet in close walking contact, in pleasant memory as it lingers enticingly below the outer ledge of the high plateau's southern rim. The landscape to the north is very moderate. It reveals, very soon, the beautiful path (42) to Entoto Natural Park (Nursery) 34, where extensive nature restoration work has been carried out for many years.

The superficial water-conducting metal pipe (37) assists the mountain hike where its apparent suitability begins on the slope above the valley [A] and reaches a gentle high level at (38) - (B).

[CAUTION] - Precautionary Commitments

 [CAUTION]: Enchanting Forest

The Highland of Viewpoint (16)

However, this forest is somewhat enchanting, and the paths end beyond its boundary, which can cause great difficulty with orientation. This original forest is captivatingly wild and consists of more than 50-year-old indigenous Juniperus procera trees that provide a unique contact to Nature with somewhat exotic primaeval lushness and a great surprise beyond what a visitor would expect in such proximity to the Capital. This native Juniper woodland (40) is massive in appearance and stunning in vitality, with a perfect, lush and dense undergrowth. However, the most adventurous and dangerous site is instead Bees' Cliff (14), depicted here to the right, with its stunningly dramatic Nature and treacherously concealed abyss.

The Secure Way Back for Lost and Worried People
To find out from this enchanting and beautiful original forest (40) just east of point (16), a lost person only ought to follow its very apparent slope down the east of the valley and thus in short contact with the open environment and clear paths that quickly show where you are in relation to the rest of the Park. In addition, point (19) and further the valley [A] of Entoto Kidane Mehret (32) are very close and can be reached quickly. This pleasant return Entoto Kidane Mehret (32) is a gentle route downwards without gorges or precipices.

The Canyon's Gorgeously Refreshing Nature

Lofty Trails Towards the High Plateau

Caution: The southern rim of the high plateau (14) - (15)

For the Adventurous: Maps & Activities
A Canyon Of Adventure and Cosy Picnics
This Canyon (B) - (14) also provides the most pleasant, magical mountain views, with sights and picnics that offer an utterly captivating experience of Nature. A glade ledge on the slope is the site for the underground fort ruin (38) - (B) and constitutes the actual gate to the twilight cleft of the Canyon (B) - (14). The paths viewed above the Canyon landscape are gentle and attractive up to the last safe point of the tributary gorge (36), shown in the lower part of the loop (14). Thus, with a few exceptions, such as the hidden abyss along the upper part of the map loop (14), most trails have a clear upward direction toward Entoto's high plateau. The majority of the trails' clear upward direction on Entoto's mountain massif begins within the valley [A] at points (37) and (19), which together are near the cosy Entoto Kidane Mehret (1).

The Environment, Culture and Prosperity

Science, time and labour remain critical for environmental restoration; this demand includes massive protection projects to provide young plants with a replacement for the lost ground of the ecological heritage (biotope) and its vital natural protective properties. Hence, restoring a lost biotope is complicated and requires considerable effort to recreate a reliable substitute for the primaeval forest's missing shielding armour. Therefore, due to the absence of the essential protective functions of mother trees and other plants, enormous efforts are required to recreate these guardian functions for the tender Indigenous seedlings, which otherwise do not survive the very exposed ground.

Assessing Indigenous Seeds Based on
The Climate Zones of the Country
Hence, due to Ethiopia's varied climates and altitudes, the genetic legacy has shaped trees that, although belonging to the same species, have developed differences in genetic heritage to adapt to these different climate zones. Thus, the mistake of using seedlings from a tree whose genetic origin is a moist, shady gorge on a dry southern slope undermines these trees' ability to survive and that of other organisms, including humans.

The Panorama Photographs Show the View from Plateau Ledge No. 16.
From viviewpoint16), it provides resting places for picnics in social tranquillity and contemplation about the unique Nature, which is facilitated quickly by the high point of view, even over the mist-veiled Capital far below the southern slopes. Much closer, the farmhouse is reminded and not far below even the spiritually chanting walls of Entoto Kidane Mehret Church (32).
