[ Entrance Fee ]

The entrance to Entoto Natural Park is free, but the outside parking fee is 25 - 40 birr per hour if you're coming in your car. However, although the Park's Nature is free to visit, Entoto Park Gate Z's entertainment and amusement activities are usually accessible for a fee. Entoto Kidane Mehret's concealed path
The hidden path between the Sanctuary and the gorge runs attractively behind Entoto Kidane Mehret (32) in a concealed curve below its wall and passes through a small part of the village before the path  (5) opens along a deep ravine and finishes with a downhill towards a traditional bridge. This bridge crossing over the sculptural gorge within the valley [A] with the cosy picnic source (19) is also the natural start for more dramatic hikes towards the high plateau by the first passing point (37) or (19).

The most necessary for the Park's experience, picnics, and candy shop is across the bus or taxi stop from the communities (1), (43), and (Z). For those very early in the dawn, there is a small shop at the beginning of the Juniper forest, just next to the health spring with its associated buildings (31). Location and Transportation
Therefore, the buses and taxis frequently come to Entoto Kidane Mehret before they turn downhill towards Shero Meda. They soon arrive at the Shero Meda (Shiromeda) station and society and further to the central part of the Capital. This northern outskirt of the Capital offers surprising topographical accessibility, both to the attractive settlement's traditional facilities and a gateway to the beauty of the mountain massif.

  • The possibilities for activities are extensive, but the unique Nature offers a wide range of activities through the dramatic terrain in the centre.

  • Regarding events for the physically active and sporty, there are limitations in that the area is a bit difficult in the vast and dramatic landscape.

  • Learning about this vast area and its possibilities often requires more time than the active can boast. Therefore, maps and specific points can quickly find highlights within half an hour's walk from Entoto Kidane Mehret (1).

Picnics and Spring Water Baths

  • Those who want a lot of pleasure without demanding the efforts of any mountain hike offer the opportunity instead of choosing public transport (taxi). By this regular taxi, the route offers easy transportation along the mountain's side that reaches the vast high plateau that extends around Entoto Maryam (43) and its society.
  • Entoto Maryam (43) is the old Capital's location, with museums, historic buildings, and unique architecture, including an excellent opportunity for leisurely walks. A high plateau of the gentle undulated landscape is evident, and accessible trails are presented. A terrain vehicle can reasonably make close contact with the unique sights and activities described in most earlier hiking trails from Entoto Kidane Mehret (1).

    • Note that the mountain range is vast, and the family on an excursion should avoid the tiring adventure tours beyond the line of sight over the landscape of the mountain range.     Seasons for Swimming or Hiking

     Despite the period that has passed from these photo opportunities and the previous rains being over a month, it is still a great asset of bath and fresh spring water flow on the higher ground of Entoto. But for those hilarious adventures, it would have been even more suitable if they had occurred a month earlier and thus offered even more enjoyable spontaneous bath activities.

    "Entoto's climate during the rainy season was far from pleasant, for it suffered from many storms. A French traveller, Jules Borelli, states that it was a place of much lightning, thunder and fog, while his compatriot, Charles Michel, remarked that ''exposed to the wind, difficult to access, and without drinking water'' (Ibid, p.103).

    These photos of water-filled streams and cascading waterfalls were shot just above Bees' Cliff (14) at Entoto's southern highland plateau from early October to November. Therefore, it has been about one to two months since the long rainy season ended for all these active water sports photographs.

    Harmonic Currents Along the River

    **Caution During Rainy Seasons

    Since all streams around Entoto run up within a short distance to the highest part of the plateau, there is no risk of being surprised by far and accumulated sudden river flow from an unknown range. There is no known weakness in the deep rock pools that could constitute a magazine water mass just waiting to break through a weak point in the cliff bottom. However, no person should walk on the riverbanks of the ravines in the aftermath of heavy rain, as this poses an immediate danger to life. A mistake on slippery ground can be fatal despite the apparent alert about the fast water flow. This torrential force along the river banks can quickly take a person or their pet beyond rescue in the relentless power of a rushing water flow. Therefore, it is crucial to offer a gentle and exquisite excursion even during the few hours of clear weather during the seasonal deluges. Furthermore, this place (19) provides an excellent and cosy invitation to gain an initial practical view of an underground reservoir and water technologies with a comfortable little walk obtained just to the right of the bridge, following the path (5) - [A] - (19) at Entoto Kidane Mehret (1).


    Water: There must be water available all year round. Most of the brooks dry out sometime during the year. There are, however, a few springs within the park area that provide water for all seasons. Rain Season: There are two rainy seasons per year: the minor rains from March to May and the big rains from July to September. The highest rainfall intensity occurs in July and August (Demissew 1988).


    Season Limited Canyon Hiking

    This seasonal dry creek-bed hiking within the secluded vein of the canyon (35) - (B) can be an exhilarating experience where the shadows fall mysteriously in pesky creatures from the past and concealed cliff space just waiting for the action in a somewhat overwhelming flow of impressions. Observing the hiking directly in the dry brook bed is only possible if some months have elapsed since the last rainy season. Therefore, the dry brook bed offers adventure experiences unique to those with the courage to surprise a pleasant, strenuous Hyena.


    The Rising Shoulders of Entoto's Massif

    This mysterious but inviting twilight cleft of the canyon (B) - (14)  dominates the landscape and is an excellent place for the well-equipped family to appreciate unforgettable adventures. However, this canyon (B) - (35) - (14) also assists the most pleasant magical mountain views with sights and picnics that offer an utterly captivating nature. This visible clarity in the appearance and selection of trails is apparent here thanks to the attractive overview of the sculptural introduction towards this very family-friendly gorge and river (35) - (B) and its paths that ultimately deviate along the tributary creek (36).

    A Canyon of Great Beauty and Drama

    The trails towards the first contact with the southern rim of the high plateau (41 - 42) - (14) follow a clear upward direction on Entoto's mountain massif. This visible clarity in the appearance and selection of trails is apparent here, thanks to the attractive overview of the sculptural introduction of this family-friendly upper slope of the canyon. Due to the visual contact with the canyon (35) - (B) towards the tributary creek (36) - (14), both a dramatic allure and a mighty visual guide in the landscape appear. Furthermore, the paths are straightforward to follow in the landscape, including all these exciting and surprisingly attractive paths along and above the eastern slope of the canyon's riverbank.

    The valley [A] is located just down the eastern hillside after passing Entoto Kidane Mehret (1) and the Sanctuary (32). This somewhat hidden path (5) is an invitational route with many following options. It is constituted of a concealed way just beneath the walls of Entoto Kidane Mehret's Sanctuary (32) and continues with a traditional bridge just some steps downhill from the Sanctuary (32). Further, this valley [A] invites gentle walks toward the family picnic and games at the Italian reservoir (19). This underground water technology (19) is easily reached by an inviting, undulated and charmingly curved path just at the foot of the mountain and to the right of the map's valley sign [A]. The bridge crossing here is also the natural path for those who want a more dramatic hike towards the high plateau by the first passing point (37), located just a few steps upward on the left side after passing the bridge.

    19. Italian Water Reservoir
    The Italians established an extensive reservoir to provide the Capital with water during the occupation. For the Capital nowadays, this mountain reservoir (underground water technology) has lost some importance in favour of more significant catchment dams.

    Mysterious High-Tech Mountain Water.
    Entoto Kidane Mehret's inhabitants bring their household water from this source (19). Therefore, the company is apparent by playing with children and people fetching quantities of water to their homes.

    Despite this somewhat harsh highland air, the hiking is captivating and comfortable but requires regular rest, and it's essential to drink regularly from the brought-with and rugged water bottle. However, underneath in the valley [A] and just after the handcrafted bridge rises, the mountain's slope towards Entoto's high plateau continuously upwards towards secret places of pure serenity, often with views of breathtakingly beautiful heights.

    The Assistance of Path Directions  [A] - (B)

    The superficial water-conducting metal pipe (37) - [A] assists the mountain hike where its apparent suitability begins on the slope above the valley [A]. This water-conducting metal pipe (37) makes the path easy to follow, where it reaches a pleasantly high level on the mountain's shoulder. The route deviates in two choices when the pipeline makes its high northern bend just to the right of (38) - (B), where the uphill steeper path directs most hiking routes. Just before the Italian fortification (38) - shown within the map loop (B) - a theatrical view and potentially dangerous abyss appear a few metres to the left of the path.     Unique Adventures

    With Safety Preparations 

    [CAUTION] - Precautionary Commitments
    Qualifications and care are necessary as the hiking trails are either unusually varied or dramatic in their diversity propagation up to Entoto's high plateau. No concealed walk in the dry creek bed of the canyon should be done without company, depending on the possible risk of injury, fatigue, or heart fragility. Still, at least one more person requires this type of concealed seasonal hiking. At least two litres of water per person in unbreakable bottles is a minimum for these Highlands adventures to Bees' Cliff (14).

    However, be careful and expect the worst scenario because the animals are wild. Even the most solid rock will break if bad luck and a rare and significant earthquake coincide.


    14. **Enchanting Lush Attractions Above the Abyss

     Bees' Cliff constitutes a hidden, unknown void, which can become a real danger and does not allow direct, easy proximity from either the east or the west side of the gorge's slopes. These precipitous cliff sides are so seriously too steep that all visual contact toward the bottom of the abyss is impossible. In all their Nature, a multi-dimensional, graceful beauty is nevertheless a false invitation of safety delivered. Through this deceiving natural trickery, the eastern canyon's slope gives an impression of invitingly lush beauty but a treacherous one with a fertile green breathtaking threshold, hiding a shocking void.

    Entoto Park (Z) facilities are below Entoto Maryam (43). These newly built facilities should inform the regulations for special open hours of this very modern and extended centre for Entertainment, Culture, Art, sports activities and Breathtaking Highlands views of Nature and mountains. However, the freshly made Entoto Park is in its first phase of organizational development, and it is challenging to give personal service time. Despite this, there are probably conditions for direct contact with the amusement activities, entertainment facilities and restaurants at this newly inaugurated Entoto Park (Z).

    The Former Capital
